Recent events and global reports show an increasing trend in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters, which have caused massive loss of life and property. These have exposed the vulnerability of communities to such disasters, and their capacity to cope and adapt to future natural hazard events is in question.
Lessons learned from these experiences serve as an impetus for strategic innovations, which include academic research, professional training and grassroots education,on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation. These also highlight the need for academia and practitioners to exchange knowledge, experiences, and expertise on dealing with the risks of natural disasters, and on adapting to climate change.
