Webinar Series 3

“Virtual Orientation on First Aid and Basic Life Support, Earthquake Preparedness and Emergency Procedures
for Chemical Spill

The ACTION Center, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Batangas Chapter and Batangas City Fire Station, led the conduct of the webinar entitled “Virtual Orientation on First Aid and Basic Life Support, Earthquake Preparedness and Emergency Procedures for Chemical Spill” on 17-18 June 2021. This two-part webinars form part of the series of webinars being led by the ACTION Center. This activity aims to ensure that the designated members of the BatStateU Incident Management Teams and building marshals will continue to gain knowledge and skills on safety and preparedness on specific hazards.

The webinar on First Aid and Basic Life Support was led by Mr. John Joseph M. Jaen, Chapter Service Representative for Red Cross Youth and Volunteer Service. The webinar recognizes that first aid is an effective tool in immediately responding to incidents or accidents to ensure that injuries can be promptly dealt with before a trained medical professional arrives to administer a more specialized treatment.

Attendance to the webinar on first aid was on a voluntary basis. Prior to the event, the ACTION Center conducted a Quick Survey on Training Need on First Aid. ACTION Center received a total of 105 responses from IMT members of all BatStateU campuses. Based on the results, 96% of the IMT members and building marshals expressed the need to be trained on first aid or basic life support. Forty two percent reported to have not attended any form of training on first aid, while the remaining 58% attended related trainings on the said subject matter. Their trainings were held around 2-8 years ago, while some, decades ago. Upon further coordination of the ACTION Center, the Philippine Red Cross waived the individual training fee for interested participants. Instead, participants were only enjoined to sign up as for the Premiere Bronze Membership which serves an annual insurance for the participants.

The webinar on Earthquake Preparedness and Emergency Procedures for Chemical Spill was led by SFO4 Roy S Mat. Castro, Deputy City Fire Marshal of Batangas City Fire Station. This knowledge sharing forum recognizes that the members of the Incident Management Teams and building marshals, as the University’s first responders and front liners in terms of disaster preparedness and response, have the duty to prepare for any hazards including earthquakes and potential chemical spills in the university premises.

University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo approved the conduct of this activity through an official letter inviting the representatives from the Philippine Red Cross Batangas Chapter and Batangas City Fire Station as resource speakers for the webinar. Both organizations graciously accepted the President’s invitations for both webinars.
