Virtual Basic Fire Safety Orientation
The ACTION Center led the conduct of the Virtual Basic Fire Safety Orientation from April 28-30, 2021, through the partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Batangas City Fire Station. The said online training is part of the ACTION Center’s capacity building initiatives to ensure that the designated members of the BatStateU Incident Management Teams and building marshals will continue to gain knowledge and skills on safety and preparedness on specific hazards.
Under Section 3, Article XIII of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, Occupational Health and Safety is a right, hence, it is important that all sectors, both public and private, should endeavour for better working conditions in their respective workplaces. Evidence-based studies revealed that a holistic approach, combining occupational health and safety with disease prevention, and tackling the social determination of health within a systems framework generates a more responsive and concerted action for protecting and promoting the health of workers.
Also under section 6.0.0.3 of RA 9514, “all members of the fire brigade shall undergo training on fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services and related emergency response. They shall be instructed on the handling of available fire rescue apparatus, equipment, devices and tools. The training program shall be adapted to suit the purpose of the particular brigade. It shall include fire suppression strategies, tactics, techniques and the use of portable fire extinguishers and other equipment, devices and tools”.
In this regard, the BFP - Batangas City Fire Station through SFO4 Roy S Mat. Sangueza, Deputy City Fire Marshal, accommodated BatStateU request for the conduct of an orientation on fire safety. While the original plan was the conduct of a face-to-face training and demonstration, the resurgence of COVID-19 cases and renewed mobility restrictions led ACTION Center and BFP to conduct the training virtually. Adapting to the changes brought about by COVID-19, the ACTION Center is embracing virtual learning solutions to continuously build the capacities of the disaster risk reduction management focal persons of the University.
University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo approved the conduct of this activity on a letter dated April 7, 2021.
