Protecting Responders and Front liners from COVID-19 during Natural Disaster Response and
Recovery

The ACTION Center, in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) CALABARZON Center for Health Development, led the conduct of the webinar entitled Protecting Responders and Front liners from COVID-19 during Natural Disaster Response and Recovery on May 31, 2021. The said webinar is the first of the series of webinars to be led by the ACTION Center. This activity aims to ensure that the designated members of the BatStateU Incident Management Teams and building marshals will continue to gain knowledge and skills on safety and preparedness on specific hazards.

This knowledge sharing activity recognizes that the members of the Incident Management Teams of all BatStateU campuses serve as the University’s first responders and front liners in terms of disaster response and recovery operations. During this pandemic situation, performance of their duties requires actions and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Under Section 3, Article XIII of the 1987 Philippine Constitution, Occupational Health and Safety is a right, hence, it is important that all sectors, both public and private, should endeavour for better working conditions in their respective workplaces. Evidence-based studies revealed that a holistic approach, combining occupational health and safety with disease prevention, and tackling the social determination of health within a systems framework generates a more responsive and concerted action for protecting and promoting the health of workers.

In this regard, Dr. Voltaire S. Guadalupe, regional program manager of DOH Calabarzon for disaster risk reduction and management, led the lecture and discussions for this webinar. Adapting to the changes brought about by COVID-19, the ACTION Center is embracing virtual learning solutions to continuously build the capacities of the disaster risk reduction management focal persons of the University.

University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo approved the conduct of this activity through an official letter inviting DOH Regional Director Dr. Eduardo Janairo to serve as the resource speaker. Dr. Janairo assigned Dr. Guadalupe to support BatStateU in this activity.
